Thanks for Your Support of the North American Food Drive By Trond Liu BK 1836 I would like to thank all of the actives and alumni that have helped make our annual North American Food Drive a great success once again. We raised nearly 5,000 pounds of food for the Atlanta Food Bank in one of the more unique philanthropic initiatives on the Georgia Tech campus. Many of the alumni in the neighborhoods surrounding Atlanta were very generous in donating food to this worthy cause. We look forward to working with everyone again next spring to bring about another successful Food Drive for the needy in Atlanta! In ZAX Congratulations to Brothers Adam Kitain and Jarrod Stein! Brother Adam Kitain was awarded Brother of the Year. He is a former High Tau, present house manager and also serves on the LXA Executive Committee. Brother Jarrod Stein, the Associate Member of the Year, was initiated last fall and currently serves as the High Rho. Thank you for being good brothers and friends and all you do for Beta-Kappa Zeta!!! Did You Land a Job Thanks to Lambda Chi? Lambda Chi was filled with many fun memories, and served as the foundation for great friendships that have lasted well beyond graduation. But we know that the Lambda Chi connections have likely led to great job opportunities too. Did you land a job thanks to a career network formed at Lambda Chi? Share your story on the message board. Also, if you’re looking for a new job or looking to hire, the Lambda Chi brotherhood is a great place to network. You can share your details on the message board, and hopefully find your next career path or great employee. A Great Wreck Video from 1957
Check out this great 1957 Wreck video, captured by a Tech student on 8mm film. A Tech alum recalls, "Note some of the 'kids' in the video are wearing yellow caps. These were called "RAT" caps and all freshmen had to wear them. On the bill, turned up so it could be read, was our name and hometown. On the cap itself we were to write all of the team's football scores and if GA Tech happened to lose (perish the thought) the score had to be written up-side-down so the Tech score was on top. If you were caught without your cap, you were subjected to a T haircut, like a Mohawk, but in the shape of the T in GA Tech." In the fall of 1958 the Beta-Kappa Chapter of Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity was going to be assembling an entry into the Georgia Tech Homecoming Display Contest, as was customary among all fraternities on campus every year. But initially I had no idea how much the Chapter’s 1958 entry was not going to be business as usual. Brothers Nate Bliss and Charlie Bleakley had agreed to “ramrod” the project, providing the Chapter would support building something impressive with motion/action rather than the two-dimensional displays that had become the rule with most of the fraternities during prior years. As it turned out, they succeeded in getting key tasks carried out by numerous small groups of Chapter brothers and pledges. Nate recruited me to help rig the mechanical features of the 1958 display – a rocking and rolling pink elephant symbolizing the Crimson Tide of the University of Alabama. Nate introduced me to the components that were to become our “leverage” over the competition in succeeding years: a welded alloy-steel crank driven by a heavy, two-stage speed-reduction gear case, which had once seen duty in a coal furnace and was dug out of a local junkyard. The gear case was in turn energized by a half-horsepower electric motor. We joked that the 480-to-1 speed reduction ratio of the second stage could provide us enough torque to move the earth! This stage drove the crank, which would impart the overall rocking motion to the beast. The first stage, in contrast, produced a 50-to-1 reduction -- about the right speed for a flapping motion of the beast’s ears. *In the photo: 1958 Pink Elephant at Homecoming Parade Click on the headline to read more... |
